Outdoor Burning Regulations
Effective noon July 23, all open burning including campfires and beach fires, will be prohibited within the District of Metchosin This is in response to the Provincial Parks Ban scheduled for this same date. This ban applies to open fires of any size, campfires, beach fires, fireworks, and tiki torches. The ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating using briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, that are not capable of producing a flame longer than 15 centimetres. Portable campfire apparatus that do not meet these conditions are prohibited. |
Residential Yard Debris Fires
During hot and dry weather, please contact the Fire Department at 250-478-1307 to be sure it is safe to burn.
Residential Yard Debris Fires must be
- no larger than 6ft2
- extinguished at dusk
- attended to by an adult
Please keep a water source nearby to help contain your fire.
Before you burn, please check Environment Canada's ventilation index website. The ventilation index assists in determining if weather conditions are such that the smoke generated from fires will contribute significantly to air pollution.Beach Fires and Recreational Fires
When considered safe by the Fire Department, beach fires are permitted on Weirs Beach and Taylor Beach if supervised by an adult. Beach fires and recreational fires must not be larger than 2ft2 and must be 15 feet away from any combustible material. A shovel and a bucket must be on hand to help contain and extinguish the fire. Fires must be extinguished by midnight.
Prohibited Material
It is an offence to burn any of the following material:
tires, plastic, drywall, demolition waste, domestic waste, paint, hazardous waste, tar paper, treated lumber, railway ties, manure, rubber, asphalt, asphalt products, fuel and lubricant containers, biomedical waste.
